A letter from Rosie

Last term as part of our communication inquiry we sent letters. We wrote to an awesome author Rosie Boom who wrote the book we are reading as a class. This morning when Miss Long got to school she saw that we had mail and look what was inside.

Thank you Rosie for sending us such a lovely letter and a beautiful book, we are so excited to read it later this afternoon. The pictures in her book were drawn by her children when they were younger, how cool is that!

What an awesome way to start our Wednesday!

Harry Hedgehog

This morning when Fe'ao arrived at school she said that her family had seen a hedgehog while they were walking to school. She asked if we could go and see it because she wasn't sure that all of Room 4 had seen a hedgehog before. We went on a lovely walk. It was quite cold but we soon warmed up. Meet our little Hedgehog friend he ended up being named Harry.

Here is a picture of Harry Hedgehog and an awesome story that Nathan wrote about the hedgehog.

We then discussed the way that they hedgehog looked. Room 4 said that he hedgehog was
  • spiky
  • had sharp spikes
  • prickly
  • little eyes
  • snout like a pig
  • little mouth
  • tiny feet
  • moves slowly

We also talked about what it might be doing walking around on the field.
We decided it was looking for food, these are the types of food that we think he would like.
  • Beetles
  • Worms
  • Eggs
  • Snails
  • Spiders
  • Caterpillars
  • Slugs

A great story about Harry Hedgehog.

If your child brings home the readers Hedgehog is hungry or Hungry Hedgehog talk about the hedgehog we saw and what they already know about hedgehogs.

Toast Fractions

We have been learning about fractions. We have been learning that if you have a whole and you cut it in half you have two equal parts and if you cut a whole into quarters you end up with four equal parts. On the last day of term we used toast to show this.
Look at us cutting our toast into halves and quarters. We can now show our parents that we can do this at home.

Beebots come to help us with our mathematics

Mrs Robyns has been bringing the Beebots and Constructabots to all the Whau classes to help children learn about position and direction.  The children have been learning how to make the robots do quarter and half turns, move forwards and backwards.  It is important to learn which way is 'right' and 'left' - after all we need to look left and right when we cross the road.

Home sounds poems

With our inquiry into communication we have been talking about how sounds can be a way of communicating. If we hear a cat meowing it might want food or to play. If we hear our family laughing we know that they are happy and having fun. Here are our poems we wrote about the sounds we hear in our homes.

Buddy Reading

The last two weeks we have started buddy reading with room 15. It is so much fun. We read our books to them and share our stories and they read to us. It is helping us to become more confident readers. It also means we get to share our writing with other people.
Thanks Room 15 for being such awesome buddies!
